The Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA) is a corporate foundation that focuses on "pre-commercial farmers" – smallholders in developing countries. The operational strategy of SFSA includes growth in local seed systems, insurance products and last mile delivery solutions, supported by research, policy work and external engagement. SFSA works together with a variety of international partners, including development organizations, businesses, NGOs and research institutes.

The Foundation has over 100 employees based in its Africa and Asia offices. To facilitate the scaling of Foundation programs at a global level, SFSA is currently investing in additional operational infrastructure in Basel, particularly in strengthened management, impact measurement and integrated financial processes.

Purpose of the role

The Financial Manager and Controller will support the effective execution of key financial processes and controls, reporting to the Head of Finance and Operations. Key responsibilities:
  • Perform controlling and budgeting functions for SFSA Global and Country Budgets
  • Provide assistance on financial matters to program and Country staff
  • Support Head of Finance in Year-End Closing and other financial activities


Execute Financial Controlling and Budgeting Functions:
  • Conduct actual cost and preparation of monthly reports from SAP on actual figures; identify deviations of Actual from Budget/LEs and propose remedial actions
  • Support Head of Finance and Head of Country Programs on implementing and improving the 2020 Budget and Planning process
  • Perform and share financial analyses for Board, Management and program staff
  • Support implementation of the new Financial Controlling Tool

Support SFSA Functions, Program and Country staff on financial matters:
  • Support HQ project teams and countries on finance-related questions, including numerical analyses, guidance on donor audits, financial requirements for grants etc.
  • Work with the Legal Team on developing and implementing financial policies
  • Support the Impact Measurement Team with financial figures and analyses
  • Support the improvement process on the invoicing process

Support Year-End Closing:
  • Support the year-end audit process and finalize accruals
  • Ensure timely booking of FX transactions to mitigate currency variances
  • Prepare and conduct VAT assessment for service providers and grantees

Your skills & experiences

  • A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting; a CPA/CFA/ACCA is preferable
  • At least 5 years of work experience, of which at least 2 years of work experience with budgeting and Financial Controlling Process
  • Previous experience working for a non-profit organization is considered an asset
  • Self-driven and independent working style, evidence of initiative and problem solving skills
  • Strong command of Excel, knowledge of working with SAP
  • Good problem-solving, analytical and numeracy skills
  • English proficiency; German and French desirable
  • The ability to work through "virtual teams" and in a multi-cultural environment effectively
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Resilience and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment
  • Project management experience and skills
